Birchden Asparagus (SB Farming)

Birchden Farm, Frant Road, Groombridge, TN3 9NR

SB Farming, trading as Birchden Asparagus, was formed in 1997 and has been growing asparagus on the Kent and East Sussex border near Groombridge for nearly 30 years. The farm started supplying supermarkets before realising the real demand was for freshly cut asparagus bought direct. Since then it has grown to around 30 acres dedicated to asparagus, sold from a seasonal farm shop, at roadside stalls, at farmers markets and to the local wholesale trade. The shop sells asparagus graded for thickness - Jumbo, Select & Choice, Sprue - as well as a Bent & Curly grade and Kitchen grade ideal for soups. Alongside the asparagus: homemade jams and marmalades, wild garlic and basil pestos, fresh cakes, new season fruit and veg, local artisan cheeses, apple juices, chutneys and pickles. In October, the farm also grows around 40,000 pumpkins for its PYO enterprise.
