Hooton's Homegrown

Gwydryn Hir, Brynsiencyn, Isle of Anglesey

Hooton's Homegrown has been evolving on the Isle of Anglesey for over half a century - and asparagus has been part of the story from the very beginning, planted in the early years and sold from the farm's back door before a proper shop existed. Today it remains one of the seasonal highlights of the year: homegrown Anglesey asparagus available in two farm shops close to the Menai and Britannia bridges throughout the spring season. Michael and Rosalind Hooton started with a field of PYO strawberries in 1989. Their sons Andrew and James returned to farm, more crops were planted, a butchery was added and in 1998 the farm shop was built. The philosophy has never changed: food metres, not food miles. Two farm shops are now stocked with the farm's own seasonal fruit and vegetables, homemade pies, oven-ready meals, cakes, biscuits, jams and chutneys alongside Welsh meat and locally produced artisan foods. In summer the PYO fruit fields open for strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and more.
