Wykham Park Farm Shop is known locally, simply, as The Asparagus Farm. The Colegrave family (fifth generation farmers on this land outside Banbury) have been growing asparagus since 1991 and now have 50 acres dedicated to it, producing around 80 tonnes a year. Everything is planted by hand, picked by hand, then washed, graded and bundled by hand and on the shelf within two hours of being cut. The clay loam soils at Wykham are believed to give the asparagus extra minerals and its devotees travel from across Oxfordshire and beyond each season. The farm shop, opened in 2000, growing out of a 1980s honesty box, is a full year-round destination. Alongside the asparagus and seasonal fruit and veg from the market garden, they sell own-reared pedigree Longhorn beef and Charolais x lamb butchered on site, locally sourced Gloucester Old Spot pork, a cheese counter with over 50 cheeses, homemade pies, cakes and ready meals, local beers and ciders, and some more unusual seasonal finds: quinces, damsons, cobnuts, Padrón peppers and gourds. Growing is pesticide-free throughout.
