Yolk Farm is a young, vibrant, high welfare hen farm whose mission is to help change the face of farming, reconnecting the public with real food, fresh from the farm. Ben grew up on a pig and sheep farm near Helmsley. It was only when he left Yorkshire to go to university that he realised how unique his upbringing had been. Before returning to farm, he spent years as an exploration geologist setting up remote camps in the Australian desert and Indonesian rainforest. His partner Emma fell in love with the farming life and now helps lead the business. Together Ben and Emma have built something genuinely unusual: a free-range egg farm that is also a celebrated farm shop, a famous brunch restaurant and a thriving community destination in the Vale of York. After buying the farm with 6,000 hens and selling eggs to supermarkets, it quickly became clear the model was not sustainable. The Moseys diversified; building a restaurant, a play barn, a dog walking field and a market garden - and in doing so created something the supermarket model never could: a place where people come to reconnect with their food and with each other. The hens range on a 6-hectare green paddock shaded by fruit trees, with alpaca guardians keeping watch. Eggs are collected daily for the shop and the café, ensuring every egg sold is as fresh as it can be. A burgeoning market garden produces seasonal vegetables grown on site - as much as possible of what is sold and served is grown here. Minskip Farm Shop is an emporium of local products, championing the wonderful things sourced and made in Yorkshire, with 95% of products sourced within 30 miles and almost 50% within 10. All meat comes from trusted local butchers and farmers including T.S. Hartley & Sons and Herb Fed Poultry. Zero-waste dispensers are available in store for dry goods.
