School Farm CSA, Dartington, Devon
Foxhole, Dartington, Devon
At School Farm CSA, you pay your share of the vegetable harvest before a single seed goes in the ground. They grow at Foxhole on the Dartington Estate near Totnes, on a min-till system and the money reaches the grower first - so the risk and reward of the harvest is shared between farm and members. That's the inverse of how almost all food in Britain is bought and sold. The farm was set up in 2013 by Mel Harvey, Jenny Gellatly and a small team of growers and runs as a Community Interest Company. The main season for boxes to go out weekly is from June through December, with winter shares topped up from other local organic growers nearby. There are four price tiers, scaled to what households can afford, including a subsidised option. Thursdays are open volunteer days; email the farm first to attend and you could spend the morning sowing, weeding or harvesting. Plant sales run from the propagation house through the year, with a bigger spring sale that brings in neighbouring nurseries for herbs, perennials and fruit trees. A handful of neighbours share the site at Foxhole: Wyse Worts, Mel's herb and wildflower nursery; Amy's flower-growing operation; Zoe's therapeutic horticulture garden; and Food in Community, who collect surplus produce from across South Devon and pass it on to charities and community groups around Totnes. Schumacher College sends growers through here on placement. It's less one farm than a small working economy, all of it pointed at the same idea: that growing food properly takes a community willing to commit to a season together.
