Devonia Water, Beeson, Devon

Beeson, Kingsbridge, Devon

Devonia Water comes from a spring that rises in a meadow on the edge of Beeson, just inland from Beesands on the South Devon coast. Each week, Neil Graham and his small team collect the empty bottles from places like The Cricket Inn in the next village, wash them and refill them. Then the cycle starts again. An incredibly rare effort by a bottled water company. Reusing glass rather than melting it down is the whole point of the business. The spring is bottled in 330ml and 750ml glass, sold to hotels, restaurants and wedding venues across the county, then picked up again on the next round. Each bottle is washed and refilled on average eight times. The energy saved against making a new one - or even crushing and reforming an old one - runs to roughly sixteen times less. Devonia is, so far, the only spring water company in the south of England working this way and twenty years of trading has kept around 187 tonnes of glass out of the recycling chain entirely. The bottles end up behind the bar at Burgh Island Hotel, Bovey Castle, Hotel Endsleigh and dozens of other places across Devon.
