Woodhouse Farm Eco Camping, West Alvington, Devon
West Alvington, Kingsbridge, Devon
At Woodhouse Farm in West Alvington, the same family have farmed beef, lamb and cereals for over a century. The eco campsite on the hilltop above Kingsbridge is the fourth generation's newest venture - a small site, open seasonally on a level field overlooking the Ria. Pitches are basic by design: tent only, ten metres square on grass, no hard standing, no electric, no lighting after dark. A short walk down the hill drops you into Kingsbridge town centre - shops, riverside pubs, the ferry down the estuary to Salcombe. Closer in, the Ring O' Bells is the village pub. Bantham, Hope Cove and Slapton Sands are a short drive in three directions across the South Hams. Camping is a sideline at Woodhouse, not the main event. The cattle and the cereals are the purpose of the farm; the tents are just the newest way the family has found to share it.

What do you produce?
A working mixed farm of suckler beef, lamb and cereals, in the same family's hands for over a century and now in the fourth generation. The beef cattle are run on the suckler model, where the cows raise their own calves on grass until weaning. It is the longer-view system. Lambs run on the grass alongside. The cereal acres rotate through the holding.
Tell us about your rental accomodation
The tent only campsite is a single level field on the brow of a hill, with views down the Kingsbridge Ria. Pitches are roughly ten metres square, on farm grass. There is no hard standing, no electric hook-up, no lighting after dark, so a head-torch is sensible. Facilities sit in one cluster: two composting long-drops with sinks, one cubicle with a warm (not hot) shower, an outdoor cold-water shower for hotter days, a mains tap for drinking water, and a washing-up area. Fire pits with free logs are provided on each pitch. Dogs are welcome on a lead because livestock graze in the field next door.
How many people can you accommodate?
Pitches are sized roughly ten metres square and take tents only, on grass. There is no hard standing and no electric hook-up.
