Dorset Blue Vinny, Sturminster Newton, Dorset

Woodbridge Farm, Sturminster Newton, DT10 2BD

Dorset Blue Vinny is, I'd argue, Dorset's most famous cheese: a traditional unpasteurised blue made at Woodbridge Farm near Sturminster Newton. The Davies family are its only makers, and the cheese has held Protected Geographical Indication status since 1998. It's made the hard way: unpasteurised milk from the farm's own Holstein Friesian herd and a recipe roughly 300 years old, which had almost disappeared by the late twentieth century before Mike Davies revived it at Woodbridge Farm in the early 1980s. The cheese is made and matured on site, and the family runs it across two generations: Richard farms, Emily turns surplus cheese into the Dorset Blue Soup Co. James Martin featured the farm on his Islands to Highlands series. Forty years into its revival, a cheese that was once practically folklore is back to being something you can simply go and buy. A cheese that has it's home running through its veins.
