Salakee Farm, Isles of Scilly, TR21 0NZ

Salakee Farm on St Mary's, Isles of Scilly is a regenerative mixed farm: a no-dig market garden, mob-grazed Dexter beef, eggs and a farm cottage, all built on soils Kylie and Dave have been steadily repairing since 2014. The ducks came first. In 2013 they brought duck farming to Scilly, an island first, supplying St Mary's restaurants including Star Castle and On the Quay, and when James Martin visited for Islands to Highlands he spent a good part of the day hunting duck eggs in the hedgerows. But the ducks were only the beginning. The quarter-acre market garden now supplies seasonal vegetables through the Taste of Scilly Market and the Veg in the Hedge honesty stall from May to October. The Dexters are mob-grazed and sold in mixed beef boxes, chickens follow three days behind the herd eating the fly larvae, bees work among the crops and newly planted silvopasture lanes run through the pasture. The farm backs onto Porthellick Beach, and a 400-year-old farmhouse cottage sleeping four to five lets visitors wake up in the middle of it all. Now, a number of years after the cameras left, this is an even more interesting farm. Find the honesty stall and take what's good that morning.
