Jelberts, Newlyn, Cornwall

9 New Road, Newlyn, Cornwall, TR18 5PZ

The menu at Jelberts of Newlyn is one flavour. Vanilla, made fresh each morning in the small shop on New Road, and there are no menus to study and no seasonal specials to distract you. Your only decisions are cone or tub and whether to add the clotted cream and the flake. (Add the clotted cream.) The ice cream can't be stored beyond the day, which is why Jelberts has never expanded, never franchised and is sold nowhere else on earth. The Glover family have run it for generations, grown from the dairy that Jim Glover's grandfather ran in the town before the Second World War, and the shop opens seasonally, usually Easter to October. James Martin built a pudding around it for his TV series Islands to Highlands: his banana ice cream cake exists, by his own account, because he ate at Jelberts. One family, one shop, one flavour, since before the war. There are restaurant groups with mission statements longer than that and not one of them has a queue like Jelberts on a warm afternoon.
