Fresh Cornish Fish, Newlyn, Cornwall
30 - 40 The Strand, Newlyn, Penzance, TR18 5HW
Fresh Cornish Fish takes the morning's catch from Newlyn fish market and sends it to kitchens across Britain. They're a traditional Cornish fishmonger's shop with a nationwide fish box service attached. The Tonkins have been in Newlyn since the 1700s, christened and buried at Paul Church for three centuries and Craig Tonkin runs the business his father Peter started when he came ashore from fishing and began selling door to door. The door-to-door round still operates. Each morning the fish is bought at Newlyn market, prepared to order and either sold from the shop, taken to the weekly stall at St Agnes or packed into selection boxes and Fish Box Club subscriptions for overnight delivery anywhere in the UK. The business holds Product of Cornwall status from Cornwall Council Trading Standards, which means an inspector has confirmed the fish is caught by Cornish vessels, landed and filleted in Cornwall. Not a marketing claim; a checked one. The Tonkins have appeared on the BBC's This Fishing Life and James Martin's Islands to Highlands, and neither changed how the fish moves. That morning's market, that day's post, your kitchen tomorrow.
