Bert's Kitchen Garden, Trefor, Gwynedd
Trefor, Caernarfon, Gwynedd
You eat in the middle of the garden at Bert's Kitchen Garden, a restaurant on a former farm above the sea at Trefor on the Llŷn Peninsula. Ian and Ali Paice have transformed the old farm into an eco-retreat centred on a thriving kitchen garden, with the restaurant sitting within it and using vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers grown on site. Trefor is a granite quarry village under Yr Eifl, on the stretch of coast most people drive straight past on their way to Eryri. A track through the woods below the site comes out on a shingle beach and the Llŷn Coastal Path runs along it. The cooking is seasonal and the menu short, shaped in part by what is growing in the garden. Opening days change through the season and reservations are essential, so check the current hours before travelling. Bert's opened as a campsite in 2019 and has grown into a kitchen garden, restaurant and eco-retreat. There are pitches in the wildflower meadows, huts, a holiday cottage in an old pig building and Yr Iard, their café down by the beach. You do not have to be staying to eat here, and plenty of people don't. The Times named it one of the twelve best affordable short breaks in Britain in 2024, the only Welsh entry on the list. It is a long way from anywhere. That is most of the point.

Which local producers do you source from?
The kitchen garden on the site is the first supplier, growing vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers for the restaurant. What it can supply changes week by week through the season, helping shape a menu that stays short and moves with what is available. Bert's does not currently list its wider suppliers on its website.
Do we need to make a reservation? If so how do we do this?
Reservations are required for the restaurant and supper clubs and opening days change through the season, so book through the website and check the current opening hours before travelling.

Awards and Recognition
The Times, 2024: named among the twelve best affordable short breaks in the UK, and the only place in Wales on the list. Beyond that, what makes it specific is the arrangement rather than the accolades. This is a restaurant that sits within its own kitchen garden on a former farm, on a peninsula that most visitors to North Wales never turn off for, run by the two people who have transformed the site.

Signature dishes or seasonal menu highlights
The food has included pizzas, small plates and seasonal dishes shaped by what the garden and the season allow, so the menu stays short and changes regularly rather than being fixed for the summer. Vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers are grown in the kitchen garden for use in the restaurant. Check the current menu before booking.
Our sourcing story
Ian and Ali Paice have transformed an old farm at Trefor into an eco-retreat centred on a thriving kitchen garden. The restaurant sits within the garden and uses vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers grown on site. What comes out of the beds through the season helps shape what appears on the menu, so the food changes as the garden does. Around it are Bert's camping meadows, huts, a cottage and the beach café, Yr Iard.
