Hawarden Estate, Hawarden, Flintshire
Pedlars Central, Castle Grounds, Hawarden, Flintshire, CH5 3NY
Hawarden Estate in Flintshire will let you a bell tent for one night or part of an eighteenth-century castle for a few days. Both sit on the same 3,500-acre private estate, twenty minutes from Chester, alongside orchards, a Victorian Walled Garden, Farm Shop, pub and food school. The campsite takes twenty-seven pitches across six and a half acres, which is a generous amount of room. Bring a tent, campervan or caravan, take one of the pre-erected bell tents, or stay in a 1955 Airstream caravan. The site closes between ten at night and eight in the morning, except for emergencies, which tells you something about the pace of the place. There are two weatherproof buildings, the Clubhouse and the Hangout, with kitchen facilities, loos, games and somewhere to sit when the Welsh weather does what it does. Saturday afternoon lake-swimming sessions run during the camping season, except during Summer Camp, and walking routes lead through private Estate parkland and ancient woodland. Then there are three holiday properties. Gardener's House is Georgian, sleeps nine and was home to generations of Hawarden's head gardeners. Beekeeper's Hut was purpose-built for two inside the Walled Garden, with outdoor living and cooking space and its own hot tub. The West End is a large apartment inside Hawarden Castle itself and sleeps ten, with a private sauna, wood-fired hot tub and woodland garden. All three properties have their own private garden space and hot tub, and guests have access to the wood-fired sauna in the Walled Garden. Camping and a castle on one estate is an odd combination. Somehow, here, it makes perfect sense.

What do you produce?
Hawarden Estate grows seasonal fruit and vegetables, with twenty acres associated with its long-running pick-your-own operation and produce also grown in the historic Victorian Walled Garden. Pick-your-own runs through the summer and into autumn, finishing with pumpkins. The Estate's Farm Shop has its own bakery producing bread and pastries, and Hawarden has grown YQ grain beside the shop for use in the bakery. Meat is traditionally butchered on the premises at the Farm Shop, although it is sourced from trusted suppliers rather than necessarily being reared on the Estate. For campers, one of the easiest ways to connect the stay with the food is through the Farm Shop. Camper Hampers can be pre-ordered with provisions including meat, eggs, milk, pastries from the in-house bakery and Hawarden's own apple juice.

There are two quite different ways to stay. The campsite operates seasonally through spring, summer and early autumn, with twenty-seven pitches spread across six and a half acres. Bring your own tent, campervan or caravan, hire a pre-erected bell tent or stay in the Estate's 1955 Airstream caravan. Facilities are in the Clubhouse and the Hangout, two weatherproof buildings with toilets, kitchen facilities, games and seating. Check current opening dates before booking. Alongside the campsite are three holiday properties. Gardener's House is an elegant Georgian home that sleeps up to nine, with a private garden and wood-fired hot tub. Beekeeper's Hut is purpose-built for two inside the Walled Garden, with outdoor living and cooking space and its own hot tub. The West End is a large apartment inside Hawarden Castle itself, sleeping up to ten, with its own woodland garden, private sauna and wood-fired hot tub. Guests staying in the holiday properties also have access to the wood-fired sauna in the Walled Garden and wider areas of the private Estate.
