Abbey Farm Dairy, Binham, Norfolk

Binham, Fakenham, Norfolk, NR21 0DQ

Few places let you buy a bottle of milk on the farm where it was produced, with the cows in view and the ruins of a medieval priory just beyond. Abbey Farm Dairy at Binham, in north Norfolk, is one of them. The Wales family farm here beside Binham Priory, with a herd of Holstein Friesian cows. In 2015, at a time when dairy farmers were going out of business, they started selling their raw milk direct from a self-service shop in the farmyard, The Little Dairy Shop. The milk comes from a vending machine, and Norfolk cheeses and other local produce now sit alongside it. In 2022 the family opened The Parlour, a café in a Grade II listed 17th-century barn. Stone from the priory ruins went into the building. The café uses milk from the farm's own herd, pasteurised for the kitchen, while raw milk stays on sale in the shop next door. I like how simple this is. A working dairy farm, a shop selling its own milk and a café where you can sit and look out at the cows. Most of us rarely see the herd behind our morning milk. Here, you can hardly miss it.
