Carr Farm, Burgh St Peter, Norfolk

Burgh St Peter, Beccles, Norfolk

Black cattle with a broad white band round their middles, grazing the marshes of the River Waveney. These are the Belted Galloways of Carr Farm at Burgh St Peter, on the Norfolk side of the Suffolk border, in the Broads National Park. David and Nicola Chapman raise them entirely on grass, and the beef has been Pasture for Life certified since 2017. The Chapmans arrived in 2011 and turned the farm's arable fields back to grass. The farm is just over 100 acres, much of it grazing marsh looking across the valley to the river. The herd grazes the marshes through spring, summer and autumn, then moves up to higher ground for the winter and eats hay made on the farm. Pasture for Life means no grain, at any point. There's a seasonal second act too. A breeding flock of geese lives on the farm, reared for eggs and for Christmas. What I like about Carr Farm is how short the line is. You know the farm, the breed, the people and what the cattle ate. A named herd, on a named farm, on a marsh you can find on a map. I don't think you can get better than that!
