A catch landed by a fisherman working out of Walney Island doesn’t have far to travel to reach the counter at Lake District Lobster & Seafood Co. in Ulverston. Chris Sanders runs the fishmonger from Market Street with a small team, and the counter focuses hard on seafood caught along the Cumbrian coast. Lobster and crab come first, sold whole or cooked and dressed, alongside scallops, smoked fish and seafood platters, with a lot of the shellfish bought from local boats. Not everything on the counter comes from Cumbria. The salmon is from the Faroe Islands and the trout from Norway and Yorkshire. I like that the shop carries both, and that if you ask where a fish came from, you get a straight answer. Alongside the shop, Chris supplies hotels, restaurants and farm shops around the Lake District, and there’s an online shop for fresh and frozen seafood if you can’t get to Ulverston. Most people think of Cumbria and the Lake District as fell farming. You'll be surprised to find that some of the best food round here comes in on a boat!
