Godwick Turkeys, Tittleshall, Norfolk
Tittleshall, King's Lynn, Norfolk
Godwick is a deserted medieval village south of Fakenham, empty for centuries. Godwick Turkeys rears free-range Norfolk Black and Norfolk Bronze turkeys at Godwick Hall Farm, which still carries the old name. The church tower is still standing, and the rest of the village survives as earthworks in the grass. The Garner family run it, and Robert Garner is a former chairman of the Traditional Farmfresh Turkey Association. That counts for more than it sounds. Godwick is a Golden Turkey farm: slow-growing birds reared to full maturity, dry plucked and hung like game. The poults arrive as day-olds each June and range outdoors until Christmas. In December every bird is plucked by hand and hung for at least seven days before it leaves the farm. Norfolk Blacks and Norfolk Bronzes are reared side by side. The Black is generally reckoned to be Britain's oldest turkey breed. They send turkeys across mainland UK in insulated boxes, arriving on 23 December. Or you can collect yours from the farm gate that day, between eight in the morning and six. Orders for delivery close on 17 December. Last year Cobble Hill came along with their English wine. I'd collect, and stay for a glass.
