Bagthorpe Farm, Bagthorpe, Norfolk

Bagthorpe Farm, Bagthorpe, near King’s Lynn, Norfolk

If you've had a Riverford or Abel & Cole veg box, there's a fair chance you've eaten organic onions grown by Nick Walton at Bagthorpe Farm in north-west Norfolk. He grows carrots and cereals too, and keeps beef cattle on the mixed farm near Sandringham, not far from the North Norfolk coast. Onions are the speciality here. Not an easy crop to grow well. The soil here is light and sandy, which suits onions and root crops, and the crops are rotated around the farm to keep the soil, the plants and the wildlife varied. Alongside the onions and carrots come potatoes, parsnips and beetroot. Most of it goes out to veg box schemes and independent shops. Riverford, Abel & Cole, Unicorn Grocery and Growing Communities all name Bagthorpe as one of their growers. There's a glamping site on the farm too. You can stay among the fields where the vegetables grow. I've listed it because a lot of the vegetables in a box scheme come from a farm like this one, with a name and a person running it, and almost nobody knows their name.
