The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk
Brancaster Staithe, King's Lynn, Norfolk
The mussel and oyster beds start at the bottom of the garden of the pub. The White Horse is an inn at Brancaster Staithe on the North Norfolk coast, run by the Nye family since 1996, and the shellfish comes from those beds, worked by local mussel men. The fishermen who supply the fish live next door, and lobster comes onto the menu in season. You eat it in a conservatory restaurant looking straight over the tidal marsh, and the Norfolk Coast Path runs along the bottom of the garden. There are 15 rooms. Eight are garden rooms with grass growing on the roofs, their own terraces and space for a dog. Up in the gable of the main building, the Room at the Top has a telescope pointed at the marsh. Most of the rooms share the same view. The White Horse sits right on this stretch of coast, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sawday's lists it, which tells you something about how it's run. In 2026 it was Highly Commended in the pub category for the East of England at the Countryside Alliance Awards. Not many pubs can show you where dinner came from by pointing out of the window.

Signature dishes or seasonal menu highlights
Mussels and oysters from the beds at the bottom of the garden, when they're in season. Fish from the local catch. Sawday's also mentions lobster and chips, eaten at a table by the water. The menu changes with what comes in, so the shellfish depends on the time of year.
Our sourcing story
The mussels and oysters don't have far to travel. The beds are at the bottom of the White Horse's garden, by the creeks at Brancaster Staithe. The pub doesn't work the beds. Local mussel men do, supplying the shellfish served in the restaurant. The fishermen who supply the fish live next door. That's worth being precise about, because the credit belongs to the people out on the beds and the boats as much as to the kitchen. The Nye family have run the White Horse since 1996, and the menu changes with whatever the season and the catch bring in.
