At Upper Wood Farm in Mautby, Norfolk, you can buy raw milk from the farm's own cows at six in the morning. Seven days a week. And there's nobody behind the counter. Erin Shreeve and her husband run it as an honesty shop, with their own beef, lamb, pork and free-range eggs alongside the milk. You serve yourself and you pay. Raw milk can only be sold direct by a farm on the Food Standards Agency's register of raw drinking milk producers, and Upper Wood is on it. Milk, meat and eggs from the same farm, bought directly from the people who raised the animals. And you can get much of your weekly shop done before seven in the morning. Two other farms in Norfolk sell raw milk direct and are worth knowing about: Mulberry Marsh at Brunstead and Coston Hall Dairy, west of Norwich. All three do it differently. I rather like a farm shop that trusts you to pay for your own milk.
