A short drive outside St Andrews, Balgove Larder sits at the entrance to Strathtyrum Farm and has grown into one of Scotland’s best-known modern farm shops. The farm shop began as a simple way to sell produce from the estate but has expanded into a much larger food hub built around livestock raised on the farm and goods sourced from across Fife. At the centre of the shop is the butchery, where beef, lamb and pork from animals raised on the estate are prepared and sold directly over the counter. Around this sits a wider larder of vegetables, bakery goods, cheeses and store cupboard ingredients supplied by Scottish producers. The farmyard itself plays a big part in the experience. Just beyond the shop sits the Steak Barn, where meat from the farm is cooked over open fire, while the courtyard regularly hosts night markets bringing together brewers, food traders and local makers.
