Beaghmore Baskets

Bangor, County Down

Some crafts connect us to something much older than ourselves. Basketry is one of them and in Bangor, County Down, Sabine Wolniczak has been making baskets for over 22 years, producing a range that spans traditional and functional pieces through to more customised work, all much admired for their subtle blends and shades of colour. Sabine is not just a maker; she is also a grower. She cultivates her own willow, bringing the entire process, from the ground up, under her own hands. Each basket begins with material she has grown herself, which gives the work a rootedness and integrity that simply cannot be replicated by buying in bulk from a supplier. She feels tremendously fortunate to continue the craft of basketmaking, and is grateful to some of the best basket makers in Europe whose expert knowledge was readily passed on and extended her love and awareness for this craft. She continuously strives to meet the challenge of developing her own skills - and those of others. That last part matters. Sabine has longstanding experience in Special Education, working as a Craft Tutor, and runs courses throughout the year to give people of all walks of life the experience of an absorbing, therapeutic, relaxing and rewarding day. Her workshops promote a great sense of satisfaction and draw participants ranging from beginners to those looking to refine more advanced techniques. Beaghmore Baskets is a resolutely local and sustainable operation - handmade in North Down, rooted in place, and keeping alive a craft that deserves to be far better known.
