Thirty-five years ago, Burwash Larder was nothing more than an honesty box on the farm selling home-grown asparagus and sweetcorn. "The idea was that you just took what you fancied and left the money in a tin." It has come some way since then. Farmer Mike Radford, whose family have owned and farmed Burwash Manor for many generations, had a crop glut and wanted to diversify. His organic delights were a hit, and as demand grew the Larder evolved, moving to bigger premises around the farmyard, until Mike's son Matt built the current magnificent barn, packed to the rafters with fruit and vegetables, divine bakes and hand-picked produce, and boasting one of the region's finest delicatessens. The philosophy has never changed: buy as good as possible, as close as possible. You'll only find food here from suppliers they believe in. The asparagus still plays an important part in the life of the Larder to this day. It's worth a trip to the shop just to buy this when it's in season. Just a few metres from soil to shop, not many places can claim that!

What do you sell?

Fresh fruit and vegetables, a bursting cake counter, a constantly changing lunch counter, an impressive range of over 70 artisan cheeses, and an extensive store cupboard offering. From the farm itself: pork and pork products from Burwash Manor's own herd of Essex Saddlebacks and in season, asparagus freshly picked from Burwash's own beds.

Which local producers do you stock?

Most of the fruit and veg is sourced from Les Ward Greengrocers, supplemented by other local farms and Mike's legendary asparagus. Fresh bread and cakes are supplied daily by local bakers including Grain Culture and Webbsour Bakery. The cheese counter stocks over 70 British and European cheeses including Baron Bigod from Suffolk. On site within the deli, family butcher Leech & Sons supplies locally sourced meats including beef from Burwash's own cows, as well as quiches, scotch eggs and the Burwash sausage roll, made with farm pork and a bit of a best-seller.
