Castors Pastures is our small farm in Castor, in the Nene Valley just west of Peterborough. Since 2024 we raise chicken on pasture there, alongside eggs, honey and wild venison. Our chicks go out onto grass at three weeks old, and from then on we move them to fresh pasture every day. But chickens can't live on grass alone, so ours get organic feed as well. No soya, nothing genetically modified and no antibiotics. We even filter their drinking water. Every batch is processed and frozen the same day, so the chicken reaches you from the freezer, and it keeps well enough that we can post it. In 2026 our "whole bird" won a one-star Great Taste award. The judges taste blind, so they had no idea it came from a village field, and that's the part I like most. The hens lay for a local egg round, and beehives on our land give us a raw, multi-floral honey. The venison is wild fallow deer from Castor and the neighbouring villages of the John Clare countryside. They live on what they find, from woodland browse to pasture plants. They're shot with lead-free ammunition as part of keeping local deer numbers in check. For every deer we can tell you when and where it was shot, and who shot it. Each one hangs for 48 hours before it's butchered and frozen. It comes in small batches, so when one's gone there's nothing more until the next: when in stock we offer loin, sirloin, rump and leg steaks, haunch, medallions, diced and mince. You'll find our frozen chicken at the Moor Farm shop in Newborough. You can also order ahead and pick it up from our stall at Haslingfield Village Market or Hemingford Abbots village hall. Can people visit or buy direct?

Farm collection isn't available at present. However our chicken, venison and honey are able to be purchased online, with local delivery around Castor and Peterborough and next-day postage anywhere in the UK (see our website link below). Orders can also be placed ahead and collected from their stall at Haslingfield Village Market and Hemingford Abbots. The frozen chicken range is stocked at the Moor Farm shop, Decoy Road, Newborough. Eggs come as a subscription for homes within about ten miles of Castor, at under £4 for a box of six.
