Chapel House Farm Campsite, Craswall, Herefordshire
Craswall, Herefordshire, HR2 0PN
Pitch on a mown circle in a meadow full of buttercups, light a fire and look across to the Black Mountains. Chapel House Farm Campsite sits above Craswall in the Welsh Marches, fifteen minutes from the bookshops at Hay-on-Wye and a short walk from a good pub. This is a working farm so you camp in a space with fields of cattle and pigs around rather than away from them. Fifteen circular and half-moon pitches are cut into four flower meadows, with a furnished bell tent, a wagon and an oak pod for anyone who would rather not bring canvas. Two acres of ancient woodland sit alongside for children to explore. The farm shop is by the farmhouse and most of what's in it was grown or raised a few fields away: White Park beef, wild-fed pork, salad from the polytunnel, eggs and flour stone-milled on site. On some evenings Simon and Anita fire up the old farmhouse bread oven for pizza made with that flour. The Bull's Head is five minutes on foot if you would rather someone else cooked. The site is run via the Greener Camping Club, which means no electric hook-up, no caravans and on a farm full of livestock, no dogs. Bring a torch and decent boots. The path to the loos is dark, the night skies are worth the walk.

What do you produce?
Everything the farm sells starts a few fields from where you pitch. The Dales raise White Park cattle, one of Britain's oldest breeds, on grass and tree leaves with no concentrate feed. Their pigs are wild boar crossed with Large Black, fed on windfalls, acorns and the bran from the farm's own milling. There is salad and vegetables from the polytunnel and eggs from the farm's hens. They also grow four old wheat varieties, Red Lammas, April Bearded, Hen Gymro and Ergyng, and stone-mills them on site into organic flour for bread, pastry and pasta. They have also just started Wilded Dairy - a calf at foot micro dairy producing A2/A2 milk from their rewilded land and species rich wood pasture.
Tell us about your rental accomodation
There are four camping meadows, with circular and half-moon pitches mown into long flowery grass and a fire pit at each. If you would rather not bring a tent, there is a furnished canvas bell tent, a wagon, and a pod built from oak and douglas fir. Down by the farmhouse you will find hot showers that need no tokens, loos, a covered washing-up area with a sink, a fridge and freezer, power points for charging and a spring water drinking tap. Two acres of ancient woodland sit alongside the fields. There is no electric hook-up. The site is dog-free.
How many people can you accommodate?
Fifteen pitches are spread across four meadows, with room kept between each one, so the site never feels full. A few larger pitches can take groups who want to camp together. There is also a furnished bell tent, a wagon and a small oak pod. Exclusive use of the whole site can be arranged.
