Clinks Care Farm, Toft Monks, Norfolk

Toft Monks, Beccles, Norfolk, NR34 0ET

At Clinks Care Farm in south Norfolk, growing food is only half the job. The other half is people. Doeke Dobma set up Clinks, and runs it with his wife Iris van Zon, on a 143-acre Norfolk County Council farm at Toft Monks, near Beccles. It opened in the spring of 2010, with the idea of combining farming with places for people who would benefit from working outdoors, learning practical skills and being part of a working farm. Today the farm offers therapeutic, educational and work-preparation placements. People grow vegetables, look after the animals and work in the farm shop, which is where many of them get their first experience of retail. The food is worth the trip on its own. Vegetables, fruit and eggs from the farm, pork and lamb from its own animals, apple juice, preserves and chutneys, most of it sold from the farm shop in the big barn. There's a veg box scheme too. I wanted Clinks in this guide because it shows how much more a farm can do for the place around it. Buying a bag of vegetables here pays the people who grow them, and keeps the work going.
