Coston Hall Dairy, Coston, Norfolk

Coston, Norwich, Norfolk, NR9 4DT

Most of the milk from Coston Hall Dairy's 300 cows in Coston, Norfolk, leaves by tanker every other day. But some is sold raw from a vending machine in the farmyard. The herd is made up of Friesians and Friesian-Jersey crosses, and the farm is near Barnham Broom. That machine sits in the Milk Barn, open from seven in the morning to seven at night, every day. The milk in it is never more than 48 hours old. John runs the herd on a low-intensity system. The cows graze meadows in rotation through spring and summer, then move onto straw beds and silage cut from the farm's own fields when the grass stops growing. Bring coins. Milk costs £1.50 a litre or £2.90 for two. Plastic bottles are free, or you can buy a reusable glass one for £3. The sat nav postcode takes you to St Michael's Church. Carry on along Church Lane and look for the sign into the farmyard. Barnham Broom is a mile and a half away, Wymondham five.
