We are a small Organic and pasture for life certified farm in North Devon. We produce slow grown honest beef and Lamb we would love to help you nourish your family. Our farm is a ninety hectare organic farm in a valley above Witheridge in mid-Devon, inside the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere. The farm is recorded in the Domesday Book and pre-dates enclosure. We keep a suckler herd of Red Ruby Devon cattle and a flock of Lleyn sheep. The livestock are Pasture for Life certified and raised on a 100% pasture-based diet, without grain or cereal feed The farm sits on culm grassland, a wet rush pasture found in the south west and now much reduced. Thirty per cent of the land is restored culm hay meadow. Twenty per cent is broadleaf woodland and wet fen returning to natural processes. The remaining half is rotationally mob grazed and then rested. Thirteen hectares fall within Dayshul Brake, a 148 hectare rewilding cluster formed in 2020 with two neighbouring landowners. We sell beef and lamb in boxes and individual cuts, sent anywhere in the UK, along with sheepskins and knitting yarn from our own flock.

Awards and Recognition

Second place bronze otter FWAG south west award. Essebeare Farm is published by Pasture for Life as a biodiversity case study. Dayshul Brake, the cluster the farm belongs to, is listed as a project on the Rewilding Britain Rewilding Network. The Guardian reported on the farm and the cluster in June 2022. Devon Wildlife Trust surveyed seventy tetrads across the county for willow tit and recorded them in eleven, including one beside this valley.

Can people visit or buy direct?

We do not have a shop on the farm so visits to the farm to buy at the farm are unfortunately not possible. Our beef and lamb boxes, individual cuts, sheepskins and yarn can be ordered online through our website and can be sent across the UK. We provide twenty-five farm visits a year to groups of under-eighteens free of charge under our Countryside Stewardship agreement, and also work with the primary school in Witheridge.
