Fenner Benedict Handmade, Norwich, Norfolk
Norwich, Norfolk
One pair of hands and a bench in rural Norfolk: Fenner Benedict Handmade is the leatherworker and metalsmith Fenner Benedict, who makes wallets, notebook covers and small hammered pieces in brass, copper and bronze near Norwich, and has been selling them since 2012. Card wallets and notebook covers, the sort of things that live in a pocket or a bag for years. The metalwork is smaller and odder, beads for lanyards and hammered paperweights. He makes every piece himself. Every leather stitch is sewn by hand. He buys the leather from UK merchants and is listed in the Heritage Crafts directory of makers. He also teaches. Beginner leathercraft courses and one-to-one sessions run around Norwich, in studio and community spaces rather than his own workshop, which isn't open to the public. If you want to know how much work goes into a stitched wallet, making one is the fastest way to find out. I'd rather own one wallet made by a person I could name than three from a shop that couldn't tell me who made them, or even what they're made of.
