Little Barningham, Norwich, Norfolk

Elinor Betts makes Norfolk Dapple at Ferndale Farm in Little Barningham, near Holt in North Norfolk. It is a hard cheese made from raw cow's milk and bound in cloth, and the mottled rind is where the name comes from. The milk comes from a pedigree Holstein Friesian herd at Binham, further towards the coast. There is a smoked version too. Ferndale has no website and doesn't sell from the farm. What it has instead is shelf space across some of the best delis and farm shops in Norfolk! Walsingham Farm Shop carries it. So do Blofield Farm Shop, the Norfolk Deli in Hunstanton and Algy's at Bintree, where it sits alongside Mrs Temple's Binham Blue and Wilton Farm's Norfolk White Lady. No website, and still stocked from Hunstanton to Blofield. I find that a better recommendation than any advertising campaign.
