Flint Vineyard, Earsham, Norfolk
Earsham, Bungay, Norfolk, NR35 2AH
At Flint Vineyard the grapes are still sorted and loaded into the press by hand. Ben and Hannah Witchell founded the vineyard in 2015 at Earsham, near Bungay, in the Waveney Valley of south Norfolk, on south-east facing slopes of gravel and flint above the village. The winery is on the farm, and everything from pressing to bottling happens there. Bacchus is the grape they're best known for, and there's a Charmat-method sparkling wine in white and rosé alongside the still wines. Not every bottle is from their own vines: Flint also buy fruit from trusted growers elsewhere in East Anglia, and they say so, which I like. The cellar door is the place to start. You can drop in for a tasting and a bottle, and on tour days Ben or one of the team walks you through the vines and the winery before you sit down with a glass. Lunch is built from cheese, charcuterie and bread from producers within fifteen miles of the vineyard, which is exactly the right instinct. A glass of Bacchus, a plate from within fifteen miles and the vines in front of you. That's a very good afternoon in south Norfolk.
