Great Grove Poultry, Caston, Norfolk
Caston, Attleborough, Norfolk
Ten days is the least time a Great Grove turkey spends hanging in the chiller before anyone takes it home. Great Grove Poultry is Steve Childerhouse's free-range turkey farm at Whews Farm in Caston, near Attleborough in Norfolk, and the birds are prepared on the farm where they were reared. The birds range over 35 acres of woodland and grassland, growing to full maturity. Great Grove is a Golden Turkey farm, accredited by the Traditional Farmfresh Turkey Association, whose members rear slow-growing birds and hang them like game for at least seven days. The association's turkey was the first British food to be registered as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed. Steve gives them at least ten days. Three more than the association requires. There's no courier. You order online and collect from the farm gate on 23 December, between eight in the morning and six, or on Christmas Eve morning until one. If Caston is too far, more than fifty butchers and farm shops stock Great Grove turkeys, mostly across Norfolk and Suffolk. The Goat Shed at Honingham is one of them. This year's flock is already out on the farm. Christmas Eve, from the farm that reared it, is about as short as a supply chain gets.
