High House Fruit Farm

High House Fruit Farm, Sudbourne, Woodbridge, Suffolk

High House Fruit Farm has been growing fruit at Sudbourne in Suffolk since 1958 - on a quiet stretch of the Suffolk coast between Woodbridge and Orford, inside the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is one of those farms where the seasons genuinely dictate everything. The season begins in the spring with rhubarb and asparagus. Asparagus is available from mid-April - freshly cut, sold in bunches from the farm shop and the season runs through to late June. Soft fruits start to ripen in June, followed by cherries and plums as the summer progresses, and the main crop of apples is gathered in the autumn. The apple varieties include Cox, Russet, Discovery and Bramley, as well as heritage varieties including James Grieve, Worcester Pearmain, Blenheim Orange, Charles Ross and Ribston Pippin. From the apples come delicious juices and from the soft fruit scrumptious jams - all made on the farm. Also available: local honey and Sandlings Saffron, grown in Suffolk. The land is looked after with the same care as the fruit. As part of DEFRA's Countryside Stewardship Scheme the farm has created meadows of nectar and pollen-rich plants, areas of mixed seeds for farmland birds, strips of naturally occurring arable plants providing insect habitat, and low-input grassland of grasses and wildflowers. Between the orchards are long-established shelter belts of native trees providing cover and nesting sites for birds and insects. In areas not being used for fruit, the meadow grass is left to grow long until early autumn creating habitats for insects, amphibians and small mammals, and ideal hunting ground for barn owls. The farm has been awarded Silver Level accreditation by the Suffolk Carbon Charter and has been shown to absorb more carbon than it produces making it carbon positive.
