Humbleyard, Mulbarton, Norfolk

Mulbarton, Norwich, Norfolk, NR14 8JT

Humbleyard is Robert Preston's Norfolk wine, grown on south-facing ground at Mulbarton, south-west of Norwich, where the family grew strawberries for years before the vines went in. The name comes from the hundred Mulbarton belonged to when the Domesday Book was compiled, and its court met at a site just over the parish boundary. The first vines were planted in 2010, with more in 2011 and 2012. There are nine varieties: Bacchus, Solaris, Chardonnay, Reichensteiner and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites, and Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Rondo and Cabernet Cortis for the reds. They become still and sparkling wines, white and rosé. I'll be clear about how it works, because plenty of wine labels aren't. The grapes are grown and harvested here. The wine itself is made off the farm by a contract winemaker. I'd rather tell you that than leave it out, because what makes it Humbleyard is the ground, and the ground is all at Mulbarton. You can buy it at Paddock Farm Shop in the village, or online for delivery within Norfolk. Jarrold in Norwich stocks it, and so does the farm shop at Old Hall Farm, Woodton. Buy a bottle at the shop, then walk the ten minutes to the field it came from. Ask in the shop first, as the vineyard sometimes has to close.
