Jack's Veg
Canterbury, Kent
Jack started growing in 2010 on a modest allotment-sized piece of land in a village not far from Whitstable, interested in leading a low impact and healthy lifestyle and wanting to be part of a solution, not a problem. A few months in, some chickens and ducks found their way onto the patch and the farm was up and running! By 2013 Jack started a proper market garden on less than two acres of leased land. More than a decade on, Jack's Veg is now a mixed regenerative market garden in the Garden of England, growing over 50 different types of seasonal fruit and veg, herbs, edible flowers, gourmet mushrooms and micro salads. The approach is whole-farm, holistic and genuinely chemical free. Nutrition comes from composted wood chip, rotationally grazed livestock, cover crops and well-rotted manure. If ground needs clearing ready for growing, the pigs do the digging, then the chickens clear up the ground pests, then the sun warms the soil and the seeds go in. All the time the ground is working - being fertilised by roaming livestock or supporting fruit and vegetable plants in full growth. On site, a flock of heritage chickens, rare breed Large Black pigs and Old English geese roam and forage on multi-species pastures and orchards. The eggs and the meat this produces are as much a part of the farm's output as the vegetables. Jack's Veg has been Kent's first single-use plastic free farm since October 2018. All veg box packaging, including salad bags, is 100% home compostable — reused wherever possible, composted when not. This is farming and trading that takes the full picture seriously. The farm now produced over 50 types of seasonal fruit and veg, herbs, edible and cut flowers, gourmet mushrooms, micro salads and eggs. Jack's Veg Heritage chicken eggs and produce from rare breed Large Black pigs and Old English geese are also raised on site. All grown chemical free and regeneratively, all year round.
