Leith House Orchards, Burnham Overy Town, Norfolk

Burnham Overy Town, King's Lynn, Norfolk

arry Maufe planted these orchards between 1976 and 1978, and they're still in the family. Leith House Orchards grows more than 40 varieties of plums, damsons, gages and apples at Burnham Overy Town, just inland from the North Norfolk coast near Holkham. From mid-July to mid-September the orchard stall opens on Lowes Lane. You can pick your own plums or buy them ready picked, and the varieties change as the weeks go on, so what's there in late July won't be what's there in September. Alongside the fruit there's the farm's own plum jam, chutney and sweet vinegar, and juice pressed from their apples. At Christmas there are plum liqueur baubles, which make a better present than most things sold as one. Forty-odd varieties is a lot of plums to keep going for nearly fifty years. Most of us only ever meet the ones a supermarket stocks. Go in August and try three.
