Lunan Bay Farm
Lunan Bay Farm, Myreside, Inverkeilor, Lunan Bay, Angus, DD11 5RL
Neil and Jillian McEwan farm at Lunan Bay in Angus, on Scotland's East Coast: a stretch of coastline where farming has shaped the land for five generations. In 2016 they chose to farm it differently: a deliberately sustainable approach, guided by a belief that transparency, education and provenance matter as much as yield. Asparagus is harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning when the flavour is at its optimum. The spears are hand-selected and tended using vintage David Brown tractors to minimise soil compaction, and graded and packed on the farm before making their way to farmers markets, Michelin-starred restaurants and retailers across Scotland. But asparagus is only part of what Neil and Jillian produce at Lunan Bay. The farm also raises free-range goats and is now Scotland's only producer of regenerative Scottish Cashmere, hand-combed from the herd each spring and processed into luxury yarn and garments on the farm. It is a remarkable thing to have built, and it reflects the same conviction that runs through everything here: that the best food and fibre comes from people who are genuinely paying attention to their land.
