Riverford Organic
Buckfastleigh, Devon
Riverford was founded when Guy Singh-Watson started growing organic veg on the family farm in Devon, with a wheelbarrow and a borrowed tractor in 1987. They've been farming organically since 1986. What began as one man and one field is now one of the most important food businesses in Britain. The company that essentially invented the organic veg box scheme and, in doing so, changed how hundreds of thousands of households in the UK think about food. Today Riverford delivers around 70,000 boxes every week. Wild garlic is a highlight of the spring season deliveries. Organic wild garlic is foraged fresh from the woods around Riverford's Devon farm, in season from March to May and included in boxes a couple of times during the season. Riverford works to a Wild Harvesting Management Plan approved by the Soil Association to ensure harvesting is done sustainably and responsibly. The wild garlic is harvested from areas then left untouched for the next two seasons to regenerate, and only the leaves are taken - leaving the bulb to grow more leaves the following year. In June 2023, Riverford became 100% employee. Everything Riverford grows, makes and sells is organic.
