Sand Hutton Asparagus
Low Moor Farm, Stamford Bridge Road, Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LH
The village of Sand Hutton takes its name from its soil - and that same sandy soil, eight miles east of York, turns out to be about as good as it gets for growing asparagus. Ronda Morritt recognised this and planted the first crowns at Low Moor Farm. Rich Morritt now runs the operation, and the family's conviction that this particular corner of North Yorkshire produces something special has only deepened with time. The asparagus fields are worked all year round - planting new crowns, tending established ones, controlling pests and weeds and giving the plants all the care and attention they need to produce the best quality spears come harvest time. As April arrives the Tip Top Team assembles, harvesting the fields every morning before taking the spears back to the packhouse to be washed, graded by size, banded and packed by hand. Every bunch is hand-sorted: the wonky ones set aside as soup bags, still perfectly fresh and delicious. What makes Sand Hutton genuinely distinctive is that they grow both green and white asparagus - an unusual thing to find in England, where white asparagus remains a rarity. The white is grown by covering the spears to exclude light, giving it a milder, more delicate flavour and a following of customers who return for it every season. Strawberries and raspberries follow the asparagus later in the season, also available from the farm. The farm shop has its regulars - people who come back year after year and it shows. This is a local farm run with warmth, humour and a genuine pride in the product. As Rich puts it "(probably) the best asparagus in the world."
