Sharpham Dairy, near Totnes, Devon
Unit 1, South Devon Food Hub, Totnes, TQ9 6PW
Sharpham Dairy makes handmade soft cheeses near Totnes in South Devon and has done for more than four decades. The dairy began on the Sharpham Estate beside the River Dart in the 1970s, making mould-ripened rounds from rich Jersey milk long before most of Britain believed soft cheese was something we could do properly. The business has moved with the times without losing the thread. Greg and Nicky Parsons took it on in 2019, and in 2024 the dairy moved to a larger site at the South Devon Food Hub at Longcombe, minutes from Totnes, to keep up with demand. The cheeses are still made by hand, the Jersey-milk Elmhirst and the original Sharpham among them and the dairy is B Corporation certified. James Martin called in for Islands to Highlands when wine and cheese were still produced side by side on the estate. The vineyard has since gone its own way at Sandridge Barton across the river, so look for the wines there. Fifty years in, the cheese still tastes of South Devon. That is the point of the whole exercise.
