The Rare Retreat is a hand-crafted shepherd's hut run by The Rare Dairy. Relax under starry skies in the tranquil Shropshire countryside, surrounded by wildlife. This hut is a perfect retreat for writers, artists and wildlife photographers... and anyone wishing to find peace, this traditional shepherd's hut has a snug double bed, small kitchen, wood-burning stove, loo & shower, with an outdoor kitchen and fire pit outside, and uninterrupted views across the ancient hay meadow.

What do you produce?

The Rare Dairy is a unique cow-with-calf micro-dairy selling organic, raw, non-homogenised milk from rare breed Shetland cows. Their cows and calves always get to stay together, forming a deep bond for life. Buying their milk not only supports your own health and a kinder way of farming but also the survival of a rare breed. The Rare Dairy was established in 2020 by zoologist, farm vet, traditional herbalist & farmers' daughter Becky, at her home farm, where she was born in 1975. The Rare Dairy is a wildlife friendly farm, certified organic by the Soil Association.

The hut was handcrafted on the farm, to a traditional shepherd's hut design, so that it blends into the rural surroundings. Insulated with sheep's wool, the interior is decorated with natural materials and paints from Edward Bulmer and Brouns & Co. With all the amenities of a comfortable, cosy retreat, including a Hobbit woodburner and electric towel rail providing heating for the hut across all four seasons of the year, the hut is located just off the farm's private no-through country lane, on the outskirts of the village of Ash Magna (with its award winning country pub 'The White Lion'). The historic market towns of Whitchurch and Nantwich are nearby, it is a few miles from the borders of both Cheshire and Wales. The shepherd's hut is a cosy space with a double bed with cotton sheets, wool duvet, pure wool blanket and both goose feather and wool pillows. The kitchen area comprises of a kettle, portable gas hob, kettle, fridge, mini Belfast sink, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery, along with an oak breakfast bar and stools. There is an ensuite shower room, with instant hot water, wash basin, heated towel rail and luxury eco-loo. Outside, there is a rustic bench in front of the hut, along with a fire pit. At the rear of the hut is a bespoke outdoor kitchen, made in rural Monmouthshire by Firepits UK.

How many people can you accommodate?

The hut has a double bed, so perfectly accommodates a couple, two friends who don't mind sharing, or even better as a solo retreat to escape for a few days.
