James Warren keeps rare-breed Mangalitza pigs on Purbeck heathland at Arne and sells them, along with much of the rest of the peninsula's best eating, from The Salt Pig in Wareham. It opened on North Street in 2010 as an urban farm shop with its own butchery and fishmongers, a café alongside, and a rule that has held since: the meat comes from within a few miles of the door. What started as one shop is now four corners of Purbeck. The Salt Pig Too in Swanage, a smaller café at Carey's Secret Garden and a newer spot above the beach at Studland have joined the Wareham original, all running on the same local supply. The counters carry Purbeck lamb, beef and the rare-breed pork, fish and shellfish landed locally and delivered daily, and local cheeses besides, with the café cooking from the same shelves. It has become the destination for anyone wanting to eat the Isle of Purbeck properly. James Martin featured James Warren, is pigs and his business on his Islands to Highlands TV series back when it was just the one site.
