The Torpenhow Cheese Company
Park House Farm, near the village of Torpenhow, Wigton, Cumbria.
The Torpenhow Cheese Company was established in 2019 by Mark and Jenny at Park House Farm, a family farm on the northern edge of the Lake District in Cumbria, with the aim of turning wonderfully rich milk from their Jersey-Friesian herd into creamy, deep-flavoured organic cheese. Mark and Jenny Lee are now the third generation of the Lee family to farm this land, and the care they bring to every stage of the process: from pasture to dairy, is what sets their cheese apart. An old hay barn, converted just across the courtyard from the family home, serves as their small dairy, where every cheese is made entirely by hand. The single herd of Jersey-Friesian cows graze outside for over 300 days a year on a mixture of native grasses, herbs and legumes, giving the cheese a unique and gently changing flavour throughout the seasons. This means that each handmade cheese is unique, with a slightly varied background taste and texture as the organic milk changes with the pasture. The result is a range of award-winning cheeses that really do taste of their place: properly Cumbrian through and through. The Torpenhow range currently includes six cheeses, all made by hand using organic milk from the farm's own herd: Darling Howe: a British organic brie with a pristine white rind, classic nutty flavour, and a delicate, buttery soft interior with distinctive citrus notes. Park House Cheddar: an award-winning organic cheddar with just the right degree of sharpness, a wonderfully creamy close texture, and a long-lasting mouthfeel. Binsey Red: a firm, sweet and nutty cheese that pairs beautifully with sharp chutneys and pickles, and holds its own alongside stronger flavours. Trusmadoor: an award-winning crumbly, creamy fresh cheese with a delicate citrus tang, drawing on the traditions of Cumbrian and Lancashire styles, aged for a minimum of six weeks in the Park House Farm barns. Oak Smoked Cheddar: a delicately balanced, creamy, full-flavoured smoked cheese created using the gentle, clean smoke of oak wood chips. The Monarch: an organic blue cheese with a creamy texture and full flavour that subtly balances the sharpness of a Roquefort with a mellow white body. Organic butter is also produced at the farm dairy.
