Yarmouth Oilskins, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Yarmouth Oilskins makes workwear in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and has done for more than 120 years. The company was incorporated as The Yarmouth Stores in February 1898, and its clothing is designed, cut and sewn at its factory on Southgates Road. The best-known piece is the Classic Smock, based on the smock North Sea fishermen wore. Many of the patterns still in use come out of the company's own archive, and the cloth is mainly sourced in the UK. Patrick Grant includes them in Less, his book about buying fewer, better things, and that's how they came to me. I'd add them for a simpler reason. Great Yarmouth was a herring town, and the factory that made its fishermen's smocks is still making them. There's no shop at the factory, so buy from the Yarmouth Oilskins website or from the shops that stock them. A smock from here is the kind of thing you buy once and wear for years.
